Datamancer’s Steampunk Laptop

This may look like a Victorian music box, but inside this intricately hand-crafted wooden case lives a Hewlett-Packard ZT1000 laptop that runs both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux. It features an elaborate display of clockworks under glass, engraved brass accents, claw feet, an antiqued copper keyboard and mouse, leather wrist pads, and customized wireless network card. The machine turns on with an antique clock-winding key by way of a custom-built ratcheting switch made from old clock parts.

This is fucking beautiful and I need it in my life.

Also, of course it runs Linux.

Last night my babysitter from when I was like 6 hit me up for a place to crash. When she got to my apartment, she gave me this neckace that she had made for me. Apparently, the town we both used to live in (Waltham, MA) was home to one of the biggest old watch factories in New England, and her father had grown up working there along with all of his brothers and cousins. At one point, almost every mechanic in a certain part of the factory was in some way related to her. The watch that she used to make this pendant was from that period, so there’s a pretty good chance that someone related to her made this with his own hands a few decades ago. And if not, it’s still a really cool piece of Massachusetts history, a special gift from someone whom I treasure, and a beautiful piece of steampunky jewelry.
